U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur votes against ending government shutdown, $3 million for her district

Republicans are railing against Democratic U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur for voting against the bipartisan deal that reopened the federal government following a record-long shutdown.

In doing so, she voted against a deal that sends $3 million to her constituents.

Republicans noted that six Democrats broke party ranks and voted in favor of the bipartisan deal, a Senate-amended version of H.R. 5371, Continuing Appropriations, Agriculture, Legislative Branch, Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, to reopen the government.

“Today I voted to protect the health care of tens of thousands across Northwest Ohio, 500,000 Ohioans, and 15 million or more nationwide who are at risk of losing their health insurance,” Kaptur said in a statement, trying to explain why she voted against the measure. “Not only will millions lose coverage, almost all Americans nationwide will see their insurance rates go up next year in dramatic fashion.”

Of course, Kaptur is referencing the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, which Democrats rammed through Congress in 2010 along party lines. Now, many acknowledge that the measure did not lower healthcare costs and fought to extend Obamacare tax credits as part of the funding deal.

According to KFF, the “amount health insurers charge for coverage on the ACA Marketplaces is rising 26%, on average, in 2026.” As part of the bipartisan deal to reopen the government, Republicans have promised to consider a healthcare measure separately next month.

As part of funding the government, the bipartisan deal included Community Project Funding for Ohio’s 9th congressional district. Included in that was $1 million for H.B. Magruder Memorial Hospital to purchase MRI equipment, $1 million for Water Infrastructure Construction and Improvement for the Williams County Port Authority, and $1 million for the Village of Archbold’s Water Infrastructure Construction and Improvement.

“Out of touch Democrat Marcy Kaptur blatantly pandered to her party’s far-left base instead of delivering millions in funding for Ohio, exposing just how warped her priorities have become,” National Republican Congressional Committee Spokesman Zach Bannon said in a statement to Ohio.News. “Once again, Kaptur has failed Ohio’s 9th congressional district.”
