Driver fled after crossing center line in crash that injured Rep. Marcy Kaptur

A driver who struck U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur’s vehicle Sunday morning crossed the center line before fleeing the scene and remains unidentified, according to a Toledo police crash report released Monday.

Kaptur, a Democrat from Toledo, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries after the vehicle she was riding in was struck while traveling to a church service. Her campaign manager, Kegan Zimmerman, was driving and also suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

According to reports, a Nissan Altima was traveling south on North Detroit Avenue at approximately 10:45 a.m. when the driver lost control for an unknown reason, crossed the center line and struck the northbound Ford Bronco carrying Kaptur and Zimmerman.

Police said the driver of the Altima fled the scene before officers arrived and has not yet been identified. The crash report states the registered owner of the vehicle has been identified, but authorities have not said whether that person was driving at the time of the crash.

It was raining when the collision occurred, according to the report.

Kaptur was wearing a seat belt and was transported to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo for treatment. Her office said Sunday that she was alert and being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

“This morning Congresswoman Kaptur was a passenger in a vehicle on her way to a church service when the car she was traveling in was struck,” her office said in a statement. “She is active, alert, and being treated for non-life threatening injuries.”

The congresswoman also thanked Toledo police officers, firefighters and medical personnel who responded to the crash and said she looks forward to returning to her regular schedule.

Toledo Police Chief Mike Troendle said investigators made “significant” progress Sunday in identifying the person responsible for the crash.

“I had a chance to speak with Representative Marcy Kaptur today, and we’re glad to hear she’s doing well,” Troendle said in a statement. “Our investigators continue to make progress on this case. We’re committed to identifying the person responsible and ensuring they are held accountable.”

Kaptur, 80, has represented Ohio’s 9th Congressional District since 1983 and is the longest-serving woman ever to serve in Congress. She is seeking another term after narrowly winning reelection in 2024.

Police have not announced any arrests or identified the driver, and the investigation remains ongoing. A police spokesman did not respond to a request from Ohio.News.
