Left-wingers protest ICE, as Vance gives a stinging rebuke of the media’s coverage of Minnesota shooting
The shooting this week in Minnesota involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer has further divided people, with leftists taking to the streets to support those who are in the country illegally.
Ohio protesters are claiming without proof that Immigration and Customs Enforcement is targeting Latinos. Meanwhile, in Washington, Vice President J.D. Vance of Ohio criticized journalists for taking the side of Renee Nicole Good, a woman who was killed this week.
The protests took place in three Ohio cities – Columbus, Cleveland, and Akron. Among the recorded slogans and signs of the protesters were “O-H… ICE out,” “Abolish ICE,” “ICE=Murder,” and “De-ICE America.”
“We’re here to say justice for Renee Nicole Good. We’re also here to say we want ICE out of Columbus and ICE out of everywhere,” Shenby G., an organizer with the Columbus Liberation Center, told 10 WBNS.
The Ohio Immigration Alliance, a pro-immigrants group, recently published an analysis of “publicly available data by researcher John Drury,” stating that at least 214 people were arrested as part of “Operation Buckeye” and remain in detention as of Dec. 24, 2025.
“We operate in Ohio every day, but we recently surged our resources there under Operation Buckeye,” ICE Director Todd M. Lyons said last month. “Since Jan. 20, we’ve arrested drug traffickers, spousal abusers, thieves, and worse. Many of the people we’ve arrested have final orders of removal dating back years — and none of them had legal authorization to be in the United States in the first place.”
The Ohio Immigration Alliance also suggested that the overwhelming majority of those who were detained were Latino men.
“In all likelihood, the number is higher. Eighty percent appear to be Latino, plus three people who are Indigenous from Guatemala. The next largest group — Africans — comprises less than 10%. Fully 93% of those arrested are men, and 7% are women,” according to the report.
On the other political side, Vance criticized journalists for taking the side of a woman killed, accusing them of distorting facts and inflaming the anger of Americans.
“You should be ashamed of yourselves. Every single one of you,” he said on Thursday. “The way this story has been reported has been an absolute disgrace. It puts our officers at risk. They leave out how that officer almost had his life ended and that the woman was there to interfere.”
During the same press conference, Vance claimed that the officer, who shot Good, is “protected by absolute immunity,” a claim disputed by some on social media.
I've seen a lot of dishonest coverage from the media during my time in politics, but the last 24 hours may have set a new low. pic.twitter.com/V8q4mcSCtS
