Republicans think DeWine will accept ICE, criticize the mass media, and the state’s Democrats announce they want to impeach Kristi Noem
Ohio Republicans have supported Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s potential return to Ohio, criticizing the mainstream media for not “turning down the rhetoric.”
Ohio Democrats have opted to advocate for the impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
ICE agents are expected to descend on Ohio as hundreds of thousands of Haitian immigrants, many of whom live in Springfield, will lose their Temporary Protected Status on Feb. 3. President Donald Trump’s decision is facing a legal challenge, and a judge could halt enforcement of the TPS revocation.
U.S. Rep. Max Miller, R-Ohio, told Ideastream Public Media that Republican Gov. Mike DeWine will welcome ICE agents, citing DeWine’s announcement about preparations for a potential visit by immigration officers.
“He is not out there enflaming with dangerous rhetoric across the country like so many people are on both sides of the aisle, so I have full trust and faith in Gov. DeWine to make sure if anything happens, if anything were to happen in the state of Ohio, it would not be like Minneapolis, Minnesota,” Miller told the outlet.
The lawmaker also condemned the officials in the Trump administration, including Trump himself, who criticized Renee Good and Alex Pretti, two people who were killed by the immigration officials.
“Someone needs to be accountable. At the end, once this investigation is completed, if ICE is the one or if an officer used excessive force and an individual is held responsible, then they should be held accountable,” he said.
Auditor of the State Keith Faber also criticized the mass media for not “turning down the rhetoric.” He specifically criticized The Columbus Dispatch for changing the title of his op-ed to do the opposite of “calming down the rhetoric.”
“It was purposefully inflammatory. Is it any wonder why people don’t trust the mainstream media?” he wrote in another op-ed – this time, for The Ohio Press Network.
On the other hand, Ohio Democrats are joining the ranks of fellow Democrats in other states and nationwide by advocating for the impeachment of Noem, citing the overall actions of the immigration officials, especially the killings fo Good and Pretti.
“No one is above the law—not even a cabinet secretary. That’s why, I am joining @RepRobinKelly in calling for the impeachment of DHS Secretary Noem,” U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, wrote on X. “From obstructing Congress to violating the due process of Americans, the pattern of misconduct is clear. It’s time for accountability.”
U.S. Rep. Shontel Brown, D-Ohio, also criticized Noem, saying she wants to impeach her.
“Noem has to go and this chaos must end. She should step down or be fired. If not, Congress should begin impeachment proceedings,” U.S. Rep. Greg Landsman, D-Ohio, added on X.
