Toledo police identify suspect in crash that injured Rep. Kaptur

Toledo Police investigators have identified the driver they say is responsible for causing the crash that injured long-tenured Democratic U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur.

Police identified the suspect in the Aug. 2 wreck as 23-year-old Jahiem D. Wright. He is wanted on two counts of aggravated vehicular assault, both second-degree felonies, and a count of failure to stop after an accident, a fourth-degree felony.

Kaptur, who has served in Congress since 1983 and faces a tough re-election race this year, was the passenger in a vehicle driven by Kegan Zimmerman, a staffer, at the time of the crash, which took place in the 3200 block of N. Detroit Ave., just north of Central Ave. Police said a second vehicle came into their path and collided with their car.

The second vehicle appears to have been stolen, and its driver, now identified as Wright, fled the scene.

Though they declined to release any information about the suspect for nearly a month, police seemed to have had a detailed description of the wanted driver since the time of the crash, according to body-worn camera footage police previously released.

“Our investigators have remained focused on this case from the beginning,” Toledo Police Chief Michael Troendle said in a statement. “Their work has now led to the identification of a suspect and arrest warrants being issued.

“I appreciate their continued efforts and the cooperation we’ve received from the community,” Troendle added. “This is an important step forward, and we look forward to seeing this case through.”

Following the wreck, Kaptur went to rehab for her injuries, though her office has not responded to requests for more information. Toledo police similarly did not respond to a request for more information about the crash.

Police asked anyone with details about Wright’s whereabouts to call or text Crime Stoppers at (419) 255-1111. Callers may remain anonymous.
