Undercover video: Marcy Kaptur thinks Aug. 2 hit-and-run may have been ‘a hit,’ friend says

Democratic U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur broke her clavicle and apparently also underwent knee surgery after she was injured in an Aug. 2 hit-and-run crash in Toledo, according to a new undercover video obtained by Ohio.News.

And the long-tenured congresswoman thinks it may have even been a hit.

Kaptur was the passenger in a vehicle driven by Kegan Zimmerman, a staffer, when a second vehicle, which appears to have been stolen, came into their path and collided with their car. Police said the driver of that car, now identified as 23-year-old Jahiem D. Wright, fled the scene after the wreck.

“It broke her clavicle, I think,” Sister Ginny Welsh, who visited with Kaptur, said in the video, suggesting that many of the injuries were caused by the airbag. “[I] don’t think they said that, but I was there when they said it — and a lot of bruising.”

“There was something with her leg … that she got so cramped in the car and something,” Welsh added. “I don’t think anything [was] broken. But then there was something — they did a little surgery on her knee, something about her knee. She tried to explain it to me, but I didn’t understand.”

The suspicion about the knee surgery appears to be supported by a social media post from Kaptur, showing her on crutches with her right leg bandaged.

Kaptur, who has served in Congress since 1983, was initially confined to a wheelchair, a fact also supported by a separate video that Kaptur previously posted to social media.

“I was a little surprised that they didn’t have her walking with a walker or something at that point,” Welsh said.

“She said she couldn’t talk,” Welsh added. “She couldn’t — she couldn’t breathe. She said it was very scary. She couldn’t breathe.”

Reports indicate Wright was driving twice the speed limit in heavy rain before the crash. He apparently drove through a puddle and lost control of his vehicle, a 2019 silver Nissan Altima. He reportedly crossed the center line and crashed into Kaptur’s and Zimmerman’s vehicle, a 2022 black Ford Bronco.

“It’s a little curious,” Welsh said.

According to Welsh, Kaptur thought the wreck might have been a hit. Welsh indicated that Kaptur said a second vehicle picked up the suspected driver.

“Could that have been planned or something?” the interviewer asked Welsh.

“I think Marcy thinks it might have been,” Welsh responded, adding, “She says, but they could have put a tracker on our car. …They could have known right where we were.”

Toledo police did not respond to a previous request from Ohio.News about whether the wreck was intentional.

Kapur, who faces a tough re-election race this year, was sent to rehab following the wreck and has since been released.

“Everything else, she’s good,” Welsh said in the video.
